The music video that I am analysing is 'She' by Tyler The Creator. This music video caught my attention because of its uniqueness, and the fact that the artist is the one who actually directed this music video.

This music video sort of follows Todorov's narrative model because it begins with an equilibrium which is the girl moves to the area and becomes interested in our Protagonist. The equilibrium is disrupted when our protagonist and heroine are intimate and they are disrupted by her father and her ex-boyfriend. The disruption is shown to be recognized by the characters when we see them stop being intimate and looking outside the window but soon after that our protagonist disappears in the music video and then the antagonist eventually becomes the protagonist. When they finally meet up and smile after the police has arrested her ex-boyfriend it turns out to be a movie where then a new equilibrium is created, but we see a figure with a hood on, ski mask and black eyes behind her as she is laughing at the film possibly giving way for a new disruption already in the new equilibrium. So all in all this music video follows Todorov's narrative model whilst adding a twist of its own.

There are many Propps characters in the video. We see Frank Ocean as the protagonist when he is with the heroine, a protagonist when he is the police officer and a father when he is the heroines father as he plays multiple roles. We see Tyler The Creator as an antagonist when he is stalking his ex girlfriend and harming the one she's with, and as the protagonist when he is falling in love with the heroine. We see the girl as the heroine as she is the target for many of the males in the music video, and we see the police officers as possibly antagonists when they arrest Tyler and maybe protagonists as they bring him to the actual heroine.

There is a protagonist and an antagonist in this music video. The first protagonist is Frank Ocean the one that gets with the lead girl first, and the antagonist is the stalker who then becomes the protagonist and then the antagonist again.

The structure of this narrative it Todorovian.

There aren't really any enigma codes for the audience to decipher.

There are a few intertextual references in this music video one of which are to the film Troll 2, the town is called Nilbog as is the town in this music video , it is also a clever play on words with it being Goblin spelled backwards which is actually Tyler The Creator's album name. An adidas slipper is seen in this music video, as well as the skating clothing company Supreme that is based in LA and sponsors Tyler the creator. He also references Adventure time which is a cartoon that revolves around Finn the Human which he also mentions

  1. Kay I think that this was a very brave and complex choice to start your analysis of narrative on. I don't feel that the video follows classic narrative structure at all and is very complicated. I had to watch it three times to understand what was going on. The Proppian characters are not clear which makes it even more confusing. Can you identify any binary oppositions? You don't always have to be able to apply a theory - the examiner will want to see that you can challenge these theories too. Think about why the narrative has been presented in such a complex way. The intertextual references are very interesting!
